Goolgowi /ˈɡʊlɡi/ is a small town in western New South Wales, Australia. It is located about 650 kilometers (400 miles) west of Sydney. Goolgowi is the main office for the Carrathool Shire local government area.

In 2016, about 402 people lived in Goolgowi. The town gets its water from a bore, which is like a deep well. There is also a separate water supply for things like watering gardens.

Goolgowi has a primary school and a 25-meter public swimming pool. Other services include a general store, a petrol station, and a club for ex-servicemen. You can also find a hotel, two motels, and several workshops.

A famous horse racing trainer, T. J. Smith, grew up in Goolgowi.

A Look at Goolgowi's Past

The town of Goolgowi started because of a railway line. Construction on the railway from Griffith to Hillston began in July 1919. It was finished in late 1922.

The "Goolgowie Siding" was a railway stop built on land owned by J. Anderson. As the railway was being built, special farms were set aside for soldiers returning from war. Many of these farms were near Goolgowi.

The village of Goolgowi was officially created on 27 February 1925. The land for the village was about 160 acres. It was located north-east of the railway line.

In May 1925, many land plots in Goolgowi were successfully sold. A post office opened in Goolgowi on 12 October 1925.

Moving the Council Office

In May 1934, the Carrathool Shire Council decided to move its offices. They moved them from Carrathool to Goolgowi. This decision was made because Goolgowi was more central to the large shire area. Carrathool was located at the very edge of the shire.

At that time, Goolgowi did not have a suitable building for the council. However, within three days, local residents had a plan for a new building. The council approved the plans with some changes.

The new building was built very quickly, in just ten weeks. It was on land owned by a local resident named Stephen Hicks. The new council offices opened in July 1934. The council first rented the building. Later, in December 1948, the council decided to buy the building from Mr. Hicks for £750.

In August 1935, a new hotel was planned for Goolgowi. George Huntly moved his hotel license from Mossgiel to Goolgowi to build a new hotel there.
