James Gordon McIntyre, Lord Sorn, , MC & Bar (1896–1983) was an important Scottish lawyer and judge. He was also a brave war hero from the First World War. Most people knew him by his middle name, Gordon.

The Life of Lord Sorn
Gordon McIntyre was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on July 21, 1896. His father bought Sorn Castle in 1908. Gordon went to a school called Winchester School.
A Young War Hero
When the First World War began, Gordon was only 18 years old. He joined the Ayrshire Yeomanry and became an officer. He fought in the Gallipoli campaign where he was badly hurt. After he got better, he went to the trenches of the Somme.
Gordon showed great bravery during the war. He won the Military Cross for capturing an enemy machine gun post. He later won a second Military Cross and also the Croix de Guerre, a French military award. Sadly, he lost a leg in a grenade attack.
Education and Law Career
After the war, Gordon studied at Balliol College, Oxford. He then studied law at Glasgow University. In 1923, he became an advocate, which is a type of lawyer who argues cases in court. He became a King's Counsel (KC) in 1936. This meant he was a very senior and respected lawyer.
From 1939 to 1944, he was the leader of the Faculty of Advocates. This is a group of all the advocates in Scotland.
Becoming a Judge
In 1944, Gordon McIntyre became a high-ranking judge. He was given the special title of Lord Sorn. He worked as a judge, known as a Senator of the College of Justice, until he retired in 1963.
Gordon McIntyre passed away on July 1, 1983. He is buried in the churchyard at Sorn.
Family Life
In 1923, Gordon McIntyre married Madeline Scott Moncrieff. They had two children together: Robert Gordon McIntyre and Olivia McIntyre.
