Gordon Riots facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Gordon Riots were a series of big protests and riots that happened in London, England, in 1780. They started as a peaceful protest but quickly turned violent.

The riots were mainly about religion. In 1778, the British Parliament passed a law called the Catholic Relief Act. This law made things a little easier for people who followed the Roman Catholic Christian religion. For example, it allowed Catholics to join the army without having to say a special oath that went against their beliefs. Many British people who were Protestants did not like this new law.

In 1780, a man named Lord George Gordon led a group of Protestants who wanted the Catholic Relief Act to be taken back, or repealed.

What Caused the Riots?

The main reason for the Gordon Riots was the new law that gave some rights back to Roman Catholics. Many Protestants in Britain were worried that this law would weaken the power of the Protestant Church and the King. They feared that Catholics might become too powerful again.

Lord George Gordon was a member of Parliament and a strong supporter of Protestant rights. He became the leader of a group called the Protestant Association. This group believed that the Catholic Relief Act was dangerous for Britain.

How the Riots Started

On June 2, 1780, Lord Gordon organized a large protest. Thousands of people who agreed with him gathered. They wore blue cockades (ribbons or rosettes) on their hats to show they were part of the protest.

The crowd marched through London, heading towards the Houses of Parliament. At first, the protest was peaceful. However, as the crowd grew larger and more excited, things started to get out of control.

The Riots Turn Violent

As the protesters marched, they began to attack the carriages of members of Parliament. They shouted names and insults at them. Soon, the violence spread. The rioters started targeting buildings connected to Roman Catholics. They attacked and set fire to Catholic churches and chapels.

The riots continued for several days. Mobs roamed the streets, destroying property and causing chaos. They also attacked the homes of important people who supported the Catholic Relief Act. The city of London was in a state of disorder.

Ending the Riots

The local police and soldiers were called in to stop the riots. It took several days of fighting to bring the situation under control. Many people were arrested, and some were even killed during the violence. The Gordon Riots showed how strong feelings about religion could lead to widespread unrest and destruction in society.
