Gore is a small place in Hocking County, in the U.S. state of Ohio. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or a village. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

History of Gore

Gore has had a few different names over time, like Hamlin, New Gore, and Burgessville.

How Gore Started

The area that became Gore actually started as two separate, smaller towns very close to each other.

  • Burgessville was planned out first, in January 1871. To "lay out" a town means to plan its streets and building lots.
  • Hamlin was planned out shortly after, in February 1871.

These two towns were rivals, meaning they were competing with each other. They were only separated by railroad tracks. Over time, these two small towns grew together and became one community, which is now known as Gore.

Where the Name "Gore" Comes From

The name "Gore" is thought to come from a term used in dressmaking. A "gore" is a triangular piece of fabric that is sewn into a skirt or dress to make it wider or give it a special shape. It's an interesting and unusual way for a community to get its name!
