About Gorham

Gorham's History

Gorham began a long time ago, in the early 1800s. The very first building was a public house, built by Thomas Haistead. This was a place where people could stay or meet.

The nearby Flint Creek was very important for the community. Its flowing water helped power early businesses. There was a grist mill, which ground grain into flour. There was also a saw mill, built in 1808, which cut wood.

Over time, Gorham grew bigger. It soon had many useful shops. These included a general store, a drug store, a hardware store, and a hotel.

In 1868, a big fire sadly destroyed most of these business buildings. But the people of Gorham worked hard. They quickly rebuilt their shops and community.
