The Gorham Covered Bridge is a special old bridge in Vermont. It crosses over Otter Creek. You can find it in the countryside between Pittsford and Proctor, Vermont. This bridge was built a long time ago, in 1841. It was made by two builders, Abraham Owen and Nicholas M. Powers. Nicholas Powers later became very famous for building bridges. The Gorham Covered Bridge is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This list helps protect important historical places.

About the Gorham Covered Bridge

The Gorham Covered Bridge connects two small towns. These towns are Proctor and Pittsford in Rutland County, Vermont. The bridge carries Gorham Bridge Road. This road is a small path that marks the border between the towns.

How the Bridge Looks

The bridge goes from east to west over the creek. The creek flows towards the north. It is a single-span bridge. This means it crosses the whole distance in one go. The bridge is about 114 feet (35 m) long. It rests on strong stone supports. These supports have been covered with concrete.

The bridge has been made even stronger. Special laminated beams were added underneath the road. The road deck itself is about 18 feet (5.5 m) wide. The outside of the bridge is covered with vertical wooden boards. These boards stop just below the roof. The roof is shaped like a gable. It is now covered with corrugated metal. The wooden siding also goes around the sides. It extends a little way inside the bridge openings.

A Piece of History

The Gorham Covered Bridge was built in 1841. This makes it one of Vermont's oldest covered bridges still standing today. It was built by Abraham Owen and Nicholas M. Powers. At the time, Powers was learning from Owen.

Nicholas M. Powers was born in Vermont. He became one of the most famous bridge builders in the 1800s. He built many covered bridges. When the Gorham Covered Bridge was added to the National Register in 1974, it was one of only three bridges in Vermont known to be built by Powers that were still around.
