The Gould House is a special old house located at 31 Elm Street in Skowhegan, Maine. It was built in 1887 by a very important local lawyer and businessman. This house is one of the best examples of Queen Anne architecture in central Maine. Because of its historical importance, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it's officially recognized as a valuable historic site.
The Gould House: A Historic Home
The Gould House faces south on Elm Street. It looks out over the beautiful Kennebec River. This house is two-and-a-half stories tall. It is built using both brick and wood.
What Does It Look Like?
The first floor and the bottom part of the house are made of brick. The upper floors are covered with fancy, decorative wood shingles. The house has an interesting, uneven shape. This is very typical of the Queen Anne style.
It has a beautiful porch that wraps around the front and side. There are also many different sizes and shapes of roofs and parts that stick out. On the left side of the front, there is a tall, three-story tower. This tower has a unique, eight-sided roof that curves at the bottom. The house also has three brick chimneys inside. These chimneys have detailed brick designs at the top. A old carriage barn is connected to the back of the house.
Who Was Samuel Wadsworth Gould?
The Gould House was built in 1887 by Samuel Wadsworth Gould. He was a lawyer and also owned a hotel. Samuel Gould started his law practice in Skowhegan in 1880. He bought the land for the house in 1885. There was an old tavern on the lot at the time. He had the tavern moved away before building his new home.
Besides being a lawyer and hotel owner, Samuel Gould was also active in politics. He was elected to the United States Congress for one term. He also ran for Governor of Maine.
