Club History

Starting Years (1873-1876)

Govan Football Club started in 1873. They began playing official games in the 1874–75 season. The team quickly became active in local football.

Scottish Cup Adventures (1876-1879)

The team first joined the Scottish Cup in 1876–77. This is a big football competition in Scotland. In their first game, they won without playing because the other team, Western, dropped out. This is called a 'walkover'.

In the next round, they played against West End of Glasgow. The game was confusing, with different scores reported. Govan thought they had scored a goal that wasn't counted. They complained to the Scottish Football Association, but their complaint was not accepted. They lost that game. Even with this loss, Govan had a great season, winning 19 out of 22 games.

Govan did well in the Scottish Cup again in 1877–78 and 1878–79. They reached the fourth round both times. This meant they were among the last 18 teams left in the competition.

In 1877–78, they faced a very strong team called the 3rd Lanark Rifle Volunteers. Govan lost this match 7–0. The next season, they played against the champions, Vale of Leven. Govan lost 11–1, with Gray scoring their only goal.

Final Season (1880-1881)

Govan Football Club was still playing in the 1880–81 season. They even traveled to Middlesbrough for a friendly game. However, it became harder for the club to find enough players for matches.

Their last recorded game was a 2–1 loss to Abercorn at the end of the 1880–81 season. Govan entered the Scottish Cup one last time for 1881–82. But they pulled out of the competition when they were set to play against Harmonic F.C. After this, the club stopped playing and was no longer heard of.

Team Colours

The Govan Football Club wore red and white hoops. Their shirts had stripes that were one inch wide.

Home Ground

The club first played their games at a place called Fairfield Park. In 1877, they moved to their own private field. This new home ground was called Moore Park and was located on Broomloan Road.
