Govanhill Trinity Church is an old church building in the Govanhill area of Glasgow, Scotland. It was built a long time ago, in the 1800s. The church stopped holding regular services in 2015. However, it is still owned by the Church of Scotland. Today, it is used as a community center.
History of Govanhill Trinity Church
The church building was first known as the Govanhill United Presbyterian Church. It was built between 1878 and 1880. The architect, Robert Baldie, designed it in a style called Neo-Gothic. This style looks like the old Gothic churches from the Middle Ages. In 1912, a special organ made by Abbott and Smith was added to the church.
Changes Over the Years
In 1929, the church joined with the larger Church of Scotland. Its name changed to Govanhill West Church. This new name helped tell it apart from another church called Govanhill South Church.
Later, in 1952, the Govanhill West and Govanhill South churches joined together. They formed a new group called Govanhill Parish Church. They used the building on Daisy Street for their services.
In 1989, another church, Candlish Polmadie Church, also joined with the Govanhill group. This created the Govanhill Trinity Parish Church. A clergyman from the Czech Republic, Reverend Tomas Bisek, became the first minister of this new church.
Becoming a Community Hub
In January 2014, the church leaders in Glasgow decided on a plan for Govanhill Trinity. They arranged for it to work closely with Queen's Park Church for two years. The idea was that by the end of 2015, the two churches would combine. They would then hold all their services at the Queen's Park Church building.
This plan happened in 2015, and the Queen's Park Govanhill Parish was formed. Since then, the old Govanhill Trinity Church building has been used for the community. It now works as a community center and a place where people can get food. The Church of Scotland still runs these services.
