The Goyeneche Palace is a beautiful old building in Nuevo Baztán, Spain. It was built in the 1700s. This special place includes both a palace and a church connected together.
A famous architect named José de Churriguera designed it. He was known for a very fancy and detailed style called Churrigueresque. You can see this amazing style inside the church, with lots of decorations. The outside of the palace is a bit simpler.
The Goyeneche Palace is one of several buildings linked to the Goyeneche family. A man named Juan de Goyeneche (1656–1735) built Nuevo Baztán as a special "model village." He wanted it to be a place for new factories and farms. The church is named after Saint Francis Xavier. This shows that the Goyeneche family came from a region called Navarre.
Protecting a Historic Treasure
Since the 1940s, the Goyeneche Palace and its church have been protected. They are important historical sites. Today, they are listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural. This means they are a very important cultural heritage site in Spain. The two town squares around them are also part of this protected area.
In 2007, people noticed that the palace was not in good condition. It needed a lot of care to fix it up.
What is it Used For Now?
There have been ideas to fix up the palace and turn it into an art gallery. This project would let people see amazing artworks there. The plan involved the Community of Madrid and a famous art collector, Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza. She offered to lend some of her private art collection for a long time. However, this project seems to be on hold for now.
The palace has large underground rooms called cellars. These were once used for storage. Now, they hold an "interpretation center." This is a place where visitors can learn about the palace's history. You can also take guided tours to explore the palace itself.
