Nuevo Baztán is a town located southeast of Madrid, in Spain. It is close to another city called Alcalá de Henares. The town has an old, historic center and many newer housing areas.

The old part of Nuevo Baztán was planned carefully. It was built as a place for both factories and homes. A very important person named Juan de Goyeneche (1656–1735) helped create and develop this town. He was a well-known politician and also published books and newspapers.

History of Nuevo Baztán

Nuevo Baztán was started around 1709. It was part of a big plan to help industries grow in Spain. This plan was based on an economic idea called mercantilism. This meant the country wanted to produce more goods itself and sell them to other countries.

The land chosen for the new town was near a place called Olmeda. The name "Nuevo Baztán" means "New Baztán." It was named after the Goyeneche family's hometown, Baztan, in a region called Navarre.

Many of the buildings were constructed by people known as Agotes. These workers were brought in from Navarre. The town had factories that made things like ammunition and glass. The Goyeneche family paid for the palaces, churches, and factories. They also built homes for the workers. Many of these workers moved there from other parts of Spain.

Changes in Industry

Making glass in Nuevo Baztán only lasted a few years. It was hard to find enough fuel, like wood, nearby to keep the glass furnaces hot. Because of this, some glass workers moved to La Granja de San Ildefonso. This town was near Segovia and had plenty of wood. There was also a demand for glass there because a royal palace was being built in the 1720s.

Other factories in Nuevo Baztán stopped producing goods by the end of the 1700s.

Modern Nuevo Baztán

In recent years, many new homes have been built around the original 18th-century town center. Today, Nuevo Baztán includes large modern neighborhoods. Some of these are called Eurovillas, Las Villas de Nuevo Baztán, Monteacevedo, and El Mirador del Baztán.

Goyeneche Palace

The Goyeneche Palace is a famous building in Nuevo Baztán. Its Spanish name is Palacio de Goyeneche or Palacio de Nuevo Baztán. There are other palaces in Spain and Peru connected to the Goyeneche family.

This palace was designed in a style called Baroque by an architect named José de Churriguera. The design is special because it includes a church as part of the palace building.

Protecting the Palace

In 1941, the palace, its church, and two nearby town squares were made a protected area. This means they are important historical sites. However, in 2007, reports said that the palace was not in good condition.

There have been ideas to fix up the palace. One suggestion is to restore it and use it as an art gallery. The palace also has wine cellars, which now hold a special center where visitors can learn about the history of the area.
