Gränna's History and Status

Gränna used to be its own "city municipality" until 1971. This meant it had its own local government. After 1971, it became a part of Jönköping Municipality.

Even though Gränna is small, people often still call it a "city." This is because of its long history. However, in Sweden, a place usually needs more than 10,000 residents to be officially counted as a city today.

What Gränna is Famous For

Gränna is very famous for its red and white polkagris candy. This is a type of stick candy that tastes like peppermint. The first polkagris was made in 1859 by a widow named Amalia Eriksson. You can even see a statue of Amalia in a park at the base of Gränna mountain.

The town is a popular place for tourists to visit. It is also where you can catch a ferry to the beautiful island of Visingsö.
