A Look at the Chapel's History
How the Chapel Started
The building that is now the Graceland Wedding Chapel was first built in 1927 as a home. It started being used as a wedding chapel around 1939. That's when the owner, Ollie McKee, began holding wedding ceremonies there.
In the early 1940s, it was called the Gretna Green Wedding Chapel. This name came from a famous place in Scotland, also called Gretna Green, where many people used to get married.
The Elvis Connection
The legendary singer Elvis Presley visited the chapel in 1967. He was planning his own wedding to Priscilla Beaulieu at the time.
The chapel was later renamed Graceland, after Elvis's famous home. This happened after the singer passed away. That same year, the chapel started offering special Elvis-themed weddings, which became very popular!
