Trouble in Ragbad
The story begins in the small kingdom of Ragbad. Things are not going well there. The kingdom is very poor. Even their special "rag crop" is failing. To make matters worse, King Fumbo loses his head! A huge storm blows it right off.
A Big Quest Begins
Prince Tatters of Ragbad decides to act. He teams up with Grampa. Grampa is a brave former soldier. He is known as the bravest man in the kingdom. Together, they set out on a very important quest. They have three main goals. First, they must find King Fumbo's missing head. Second, they need to find money to save their kingdom. Third, Prince Tatters needs to find a princess to marry.
New Friends on the Journey
On their journey, they meet a new friend. His name is Bill. Bill is an iron weathercock. He came to life in Chicago during an electrical storm. The storm then blew him all the way to the magical Land of Oz. Bill joins Prince Tatters and Grampa on their quest.
Princess Pretty Good's Problem
Meanwhile, in a place called Perhaps City, Princess Pretty Good has her own troubles. A prophet named Abrog tells her she must marry soon. If she does not marry in four days, he says she will marry a monster. Abrog even suggests he should be her husband.
A Magical Transformation
Princess Pretty Good does not want to marry Abrog. She resists his plans. Because she is a truly good princess, something amazing happens. When Abrog tries to turn her into a clod of dirt, she changes instead. She transforms into a beautiful flower fairy named Urtha.
Adventures and a Happy Ending
The characters go on many adventures. They travel to places like Fire Island and Monday Mountain. Eventually, King Fumbo's head is found. It is put back in its rightful place. Dorothy from Kansas also helps. She gets help from Percy Vere, a poet who often forgets things. Together, they help bring order back to the kingdom. In the end, Prince Tatters marries Princess Pretty Good. Everyone is happy, and the kingdom of Ragbad is saved!
