Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Grand Cross is a very special and important award given in many groups called knighthood orders. Think of it as the highest level or rank you can achieve in these groups. Sometimes, the person who receives this top award is called a "knight grand cross" or simply a "grand cross." Other times, the actual medal or ribbon itself is called "the grand cross."

What is a Grand Cross Award?

A Grand Cross is usually the highest honor you can get in a knighthood order. These orders are like special clubs or groups that have existed for hundreds of years. They often recognize people for their great achievements, bravery, or service to their country. When someone is given a Grand Cross, it means they have reached the very top rank in that order.

Different Names for Top Honors

While "Grand Cross" is a common name for the highest rank, some orders use different names. For example, an order might call its highest award the "grand cordon" or "grand collar." In these cases, the "Grand Cross" might still be a very high rank, but it would be just below the absolute highest one.

  • For example, in Portugal, the Order of Saint James of the Sword has a "Grand Cross" award. But even higher than that is the "Grand Collar." So, the Grand Cross is still a very important award, but the Grand Collar is the absolute top honor in that specific order.
