Grand Crossing: A Railroad Hub

Grand Crossing got its name in 1899 because two important train lines crossed paths right here. Imagine a giant "X" made by train tracks! This crossing was near Jacksonville, Florida.

The Railroads That Met

One of the main lines was the Savannah, Florida & Western. This railroad connected Waycross, Georgia, to Jacksonville. It was part of a bigger system called the Plant System.

Two new train lines also met at Grand Crossing:

  • The Atlantic, Valdosta & Western (AV&W)
  • The Jacksonville & Southwestern Railroad (J&SW)

The Atlantic, Valdosta & Western line stretched from Valdosta, Georgia, all the way to downtown Jacksonville. It ended at a special station on East Bay Street.

The Jacksonville & Southwestern Railroad was owned by the Cummer Lumber Company. This railroad was used to carry lumber. It went from the company's mills near the St. Johns River to Newberry, Florida. The J&SW even built a short side track, called a "spur," right next to the Atlantic, Valdosta & Western line. This spur also went to a station on East Bay Street.

Thomas Danson: The Postmaster

A man named Thomas Danson owned a dairy farm around the Grand Crossing area. He was chosen by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to be the local Postmaster. He ran the post office until he passed away in the late 1940s.
