Graniteville is a small village found inside the town of Johnston, Rhode Island. It has a rich history, playing a part in important events like the American Revolutionary War and the growth of early American industry.

History of Graniteville

Revolutionary War Era

During the Revolutionary War, Graniteville was a very important place. It had Rhode Island's only gunpowder mill. Gunpowder was needed for the war. The mill was paid for by the Rhode Island General Assembly, which was like the state government back then. James Goff ran the mill. Sadly, in 1779, the mill exploded. James Goff was killed, and the mill was destroyed.

A Center for Granite

In the 1800s, Graniteville was known for its large granite quarry. A quarry is a place where stone is dug out of the ground. The granite from this village was used for many buildings. For example, the big stone columns for the Providence Arcade came from Graniteville. The Providence Arcade, built in 1822, was actually America's very first indoor shopping mall!

Transportation and Community

In the 1800s, the village was also located along the Providence and Springfield Railroad. This railroad helped people and goods travel to and from Graniteville. From around 1843 to 1846, a Baptist church was active in the village. This church was connected to a group called the Six Principle Baptists.

Honoring Veterans

In 1943, a special memorial was dedicated in Graniteville. This memorial honors the people from the area who served in World War II. Every year, a well-attended service is held at the Graniteville Baptist Church. This service remembers and honors all the veterans from the area.
