Daddy G's Early Life and Music Journey
Grantley Marshall was born in Bristol, England. His parents were from the West Indies. In the 1980s, he became part of Bristol's exciting music scene. He joined a group called The Wild Bunch. This group was a "sound system," which means they were a team of DJs and musicians who played music at parties and events.
At that time, Daddy G was one of the youngest DJs in Bristol. Other members of The Wild Bunch included Robert del Naja, Tricky, and Andrew Vowles. These three would later join Daddy G to form Massive Attack.
Forming Massive Attack
In 1986, The Wild Bunch decided to go their separate ways. Two years later, in 1988, Daddy G, Robert del Naja, and Andrew Vowles started a new group called Massive Attack. This group became very important in creating a new style of music called "trip hop."
Trip hop is a type of electronic music that mixes different sounds. It often has slow beats, samples from other songs, and a moody, atmospheric feel. Massive Attack, along with other groups like Portishead and Tricky, helped create what is known as the "Bristol Sound." This sound is unique to the city of Bristol and became very popular around the world.
Daddy G's Role in the Band
From 2001 to 2005, Daddy G was not as involved with Massive Attack's music. For example, he did not have a big role in making their album 100th Window.
However, he later rejoined the group for their album Heligoland and other projects. Andrew Vowles was not part of these later projects. Daddy G and Robert del Naja shared the work of creating the music. They each worked on different songs in their own studios. They also chose their own musical partners, called "collaborators," to help them.
Other Music Projects
Besides his work with Massive Attack, Daddy G has also created other music. In 2004, he put together a special music mix for a series called DJ-Kicks. This involved him choosing and blending different songs together to create a continuous mix.
