The separate village of Grantsburg is actually inside the town's area. Other small communities like Branstad and Lind are also part of the town.

Grantsburg is in the southwest part of Burnett County. The St. Croix River forms its western edge. This river also marks the border for the county and the state of Wisconsin. Across the river is Pine County, Minnesota.

The village of Grantsburg is a separate place, but it's completely surrounded by the town of Grantsburg. It's located to the east of the town's center.

The town covers a total area of about 36.4 square miles (94.3 km2). Most of this area, about 35.6 square miles (92.2 km2), is land. The rest, about 0.81 square miles (2.1 km2) (or 2.20%), is water.
