The Grapevine Canyon Petroglyphs are ancient rock carvings found in Grapevine Canyon. This special place is located on Spirit Mountain near Laughlin, Nevada. These amazing artworks are so important that they are listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places.
The area is also known as Christmas Tree Pass. You can find over 700 petroglyphs here, along with many rock shelters. While the carvings are all over the canyon, many are gathered at the canyon's entrance. This spot is about 2,395 feet (730 meters) above sea level.
Discovering Ancient Rock Art
Petroglyphs are images carved into rock. The carvings at Grapevine Canyon were made between the years 1100 and 1900 AD. We don't know for sure what all the carvings mean. We also don't know exactly who made them. However, we do know that the Mojave lived in this area for a long time.
Protecting History
The Grapevine Canyon Petroglyphs became a part of the National Register of Historic Places on December 15, 1984. This listing helps protect important historical sites. In 2009, experts carefully mapped about 250 areas of these rock carvings.
Sadly, in March 2010, some people damaged parts of the petroglyphs. This caused harm to these important historical artworks. It is very important to respect and protect ancient sites like this.
