How Graze Started
Graze was started in 2008 by seven friends. They were brought together by Graham Bosher, who also founded LoveFilm. The company began by delivering snacks like nuts, small puddings, and porridge throughout the United Kingdom. In November 2012, a company called The Carlyle Group bought most of Graze.
Graze in the United States
Graze opened a distribution center in New Jersey in January 2013. This was to start testing their service in the United States. Graze officially launched in the US by late 2013. They had offices in Jersey City, New Jersey and Manhattan, New York. By the end of 2014, Graze had earned £68 million in sales. In February 2017, Graze reported £75.8 million in sales for that year. By September 2017, Graze snacks were sold in 7,500 stores across the United States.
In August 2019, Graze told its US customers that their snack box deliveries would stop in September. By December 2019, the Graze website only served UK customers. The company did not publicly announce why they stopped their business in the US.
Graze in UK Stores
In July 2015, Graze announced they would start selling their snacks in UK stores. These stores included Sainsbury's, Boots UK, and WHSmith. In 2015, Graze was named one of Britain's 100 fastest-growing companies. This was on the Sunday Times Fast Track 100 list.
In 2016, Graze launched an online shop. This allowed people to buy snacks without a subscription. They also started selling their snacks in Walgreens stores across the US. In February 2019, Unilever bought Graze.
Recent Changes to Subscriptions
In early 2024, Graze stopped their classic subscription box. This was the box that fit through a letterbox. In April 2024, they launched a new monthly subscription box. This new box contained 8 snacks but was not customized to what each person liked. However, these new boxes were only sent out for three months before they were also stopped.
How Graze Makes Snacks
Graze used a special computer program called DARWIN. This program helped them customize snack boxes for customers. It used the preferences people entered on the website. Graze creates all its own recipes. Their snacks do not contain genetically engineered ingredients. They also avoid artificial flavors or colors, high fructose corn syrup, or trans fats.
The older variety boxes had four snacks. Customers could choose to get them weekly, every two weeks, or monthly. Larger sharing bags and multipacks are also available. You can buy these on Graze's online shop without a subscription.
Since 2023, Graze has given some of its profits to City Harvest. This is a charity in London that helps fight food poverty. They do this by giving away extra food. Before this, Graze supported the Graze School of Farming in Uganda. This school helped over 400 families learn skills to feed and support themselves.
