Greasy Corner is a small place in St. Francis County, Arkansas, United States. It is called an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city. It doesn't have its own local government.
Greasy Corner is found where two roads meet: Arkansas Highway 50 and Arkansas Highway 149. It's about 4.2 miles (6.8 km) north of a town called Hughes.
The Story Behind Greasy Corner's Name
Every place has a story, and Greasy Corner's is quite interesting! This community wasn't always called Greasy Corner. Its first name was Mack's Corner. It was named after a local landowner, B. M. McCollum.
How Mack's Corner Got Its Start
B. M. McCollum was an important person in the early days of this community. He owned a building that was very busy. Inside, he ran a store where people could buy things. He also had a restaurant where folks could grab a meal. And, believe it or not, he even had a place to fix cars, an automobile repair shop, all in the same building!
The Funny Way Greasy Corner Got Its Name
One day, a farmer was eating in McCollum's restaurant. An auto mechanic, who had been working on cars, brought him his plate. The plate had a grease stain on it! The farmer looked at the plate and then at the mechanic. He joked that the place should be called "Greasy Corner."
Everyone thought this was a funny and fitting name. From that day on, people started calling the community Greasy Corner. The name stuck, and it's been known as Greasy Corner ever since. It's even appeared on lists of places with unusual names!
