Where is Hughes?
Hughes is located in eastern Arkansas. It covers an area of about 2.2 square miles (5.9 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.
The city is about 37 miles (60 kilometers) away from Memphis, Tennessee.

The population of Hughes has changed over the years. In 1920, there were 451 people. The population grew quite a bit in the middle of the 20th century. By 1960, it reached its highest point with 1,960 residents.
Since then, the number of people living in Hughes has slowly decreased. In 2020, the population was 1,056.
Schools in Hughes
The students in Hughes are part of the West Memphis School District. After 2015, most students started going to schools in West Memphis. These include Faulk Elementary School, West Junior High School, and the Academies of West Memphis (which used to be West Memphis High School).
Getting to school can take a while. School bus rides from Hughes to West Memphis are usually about one hour each way. This is because the bus makes many stops along the way. Without stops, the ride would be much shorter, about 30 minutes. In winter, students might leave for school or arrive home when it's still dark outside.
Past School District
Hughes used to have its own school district, called the Hughes School District. This district ran Mildred Jackson Elementary School and Hughes High School. However, in 2015, the Arkansas Board of Education decided to combine the Hughes district with the West Memphis district. This happened because fewer and fewer students were enrolling in the Hughes schools.
The West Memphis district took over the school buildings in Hughes. Then, in 2016, they gave the buildings to the local government of Hughes.
Economy and Jobs
For a long time, the Hughes School District was the biggest employer in the city. Many people worked for the schools. When the district closed in 2015, it affected the local economy. Some businesses in the area faced financial problems because of the closure.
Fun and Recreation
After 2016, the city government found a new use for the old Hughes school gymnasium. They leased it for free to Deon Lee. He is a former student of Hughes High and also the chief of police.
Deon Lee spent $3,000 to fix up the gym. He turned it into an after-school center for children. This gives kids a safe and fun place to go after school.
Famous People from Hughes
- Mark R. Martin was a student at Hughes High School. He graduated in 1986. Later, he became the Secretary of State of Arkansas and served from 2011 to 2019.
