The Great Falls Balloon Festival is an exciting event where many colorful hot air balloons fill the sky! It happens every August in the twin cities of Lewiston and Auburn, Maine. This festival brings together about 100,000 people each year. It's a big celebration held right by the Androscoggin River.
About the Festival
The Great Falls Balloon Festival started in 1993. It quickly became a favorite event for families and visitors. People come to see the amazing hot air balloons take off. The festival also offers lots of other fun activities. You can find rides, games, and live music. There are also many booths where you can buy things. All these activities happen in the parks and open areas where the balloons launch.
Festival History and Changes
The festival has been held every year since it began. However, in 2020, things were different. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival was held online. This meant people could enjoy it from home.
In 2024, the festival faced some challenges. The people who organized the Great Falls Balloon Festival decided not to hold the event. They mentioned difficulties with planning and safety concerns. After talking with the City of Lewiston, the organizers decided to let the city take over. For 2024, the festival was run by the city. It was given a new name: the L/A Balloon Festival. This change helped make sure the tradition of a balloon festival continued in the area.
