What is a Tor?

A tor is a large, free-standing rock outcrop. They are often found on hilltops. Tors are created when softer rocks around them wear away. This leaves the harder, more resistant rock standing tall. Dartmoor is famous for its many tors.

Exploring the Tor

Most people who visit Great Links Tor climb to a special marker. This marker is called an OS Triangulation point. It is on a block of rock to the west of the main outcrop. These points help mapmakers create accurate maps.

Climbing the Main Rock

The very highest part of Great Links Tor is hard to reach. You need special climbing gear to get to the top. The easiest way up is through a crack on the eastern side. This is a challenging climb for experienced climbers.
