The Bag and Blowpipe
The bag is like the "lungs" of the bagpipe. The player fills it with air using the blowpipe. This air then flows into the other parts of the instrument. In the past, bags were made from animal leather, like sheepskin. Today, many bags are made from modern materials like Gore-Tex. These new materials are easier to take care of. The blowpipe is a simple tube that the player uses to blow air into the bag.
The Drones
The Great Highland Bagpipe has three drones. These are long pipes that create a continuous background sound, or harmony. There's one big drone called the "bass drone" and two smaller ones called "tenor drones." All three drones are tuned to the same musical note. They provide a steady, humming sound that blends with the melody played on the chanter. Bagpipers can adjust the length of the drones to tune them. Making a drone shorter makes its sound higher, and making it longer makes the sound lower.
The Chanter
The chanter is the part of the bagpipe where the melody is played. It's a cone-shaped pipe with eight holes. For a long time, chanters were made from wood. Now, some are also made from plastic. The player uses their fingers to cover and uncover these holes. This changes the notes, allowing the bagpiper to play different tunes.
How to Play the Bagpipe
Playing the bagpipe is a skill that takes practice! The person who plays the bagpipe is called a bagpiper or a piper.
First, the piper inflates the bag with air. Once the bag is full, they tuck it under their left arm. The piper then uses their arm to keep steady pressure on the bag. This constant pressure pushes air through the drones and chanter. When the piper needs to take a breath, they press their elbow against the bag. This keeps the air flowing and the music playing without stopping. This special way of playing lets the piper play music for a long time without breaks.
After inflating the instrument, the piper needs to tune it. They carefully adjust one of the drones to match the sound of the chanter. Then, they tune the other drones to match each other. If the piper does this carefully, the instrument will sound perfectly balanced. Once everything is tuned, the piper can begin to play their music!
