The Green Hill Park Shelter is a special picnic spot in Green Hill Park. This park is the biggest city park in Worcester, Massachusetts. A talented architect named George H. Clemence designed this shelter. It was built between 1910 and 1911. This building is considered the most beautiful park structure in the city. What is the Green Hill Park Shelter?
Green Hill Park is located in the eastern part of Worcester. It covers about 480 acres (194 hectares) of high land. This land sits between the Blackstone River valley and Lake Quinsigamond.
Where is the Shelter Located?
Near the middle of the park, you'll find Green Hill Pond. This is a man-made lake that covers 30 acres (12 hectares). The shelter is close to the lake's southeastern side. It sits between the lake and Green Hill Parkway. This parkway is the main road that goes through the park.
What Does the Shelter Look Like?
The shelter is an open building. It has sixteen strong pillars made of fieldstone. Fieldstone is a natural stone found in fields. These pillars hold up a special kind of roof. It's called a hip roof, and it has curved edges. The roof also has a metal frame inside. The rest of the roof is made of wood.
At the south end of the shelter, there's an enclosed room. This room was made to be a concession stand. A concession stand sells snacks and drinks. The roof's unique shape and special vents give it an "Oriental" look. This means it looks a bit like buildings from East Asia.
History of Green Hill Park
Green Hill Park was not always a public park. It used to be a large country estate. An estate is a big property with a large house. Andrew Green gave this estate to the city in 1906.
How the Park Became Public
None of the original buildings from the estate are still standing. The city decided to turn the estate into a public park. They hired local architects to design new buildings. The Green Hill Park Shelter was one of these new designs.
Who Designed the Shelter?
George H. Clemence was the architect who designed the shelter. It was finished in 1911. The shelter helped make the old estate a wonderful place for everyone to enjoy.
