The cemetery and its chapel first opened in 1914. They are built on a hill, offering nice views towards the west of Farnham and Farnham Castle. The chapel was once a place for funeral services and could fit up to 80 people. However, it wasn't used much recently. Because of this, the Farnham Town Council sold it. It is now used as a meeting house by a religious group called the Plymouth Brethren.

The cemetery is divided into six different areas. These sections allow for people from various religious backgrounds to be buried there. There is also a special small area just for children. Another section is set aside for the ashes of people who have been cremated.

Remembering Military Heroes

Green Lane Cemetery is the final resting place for 13 brave military members. Two of these individuals served during World War I. The other eleven were involved in World War II.

Pilots of World War II

Among the World War II burials are two pilots. One was Pilot Officer Evelyn Creen Stuart Wilson-Steele. He was part of 219 Squadron and died in 1942.

The other pilot was Sergeant Michael Henry John Kilburn. He joined the RAFVR, which trained pilots, when he was 18. Sadly, he died during a training flight in January 1942. He was just two weeks away from finishing his training.

Sergeant Kilburn was first buried with his crew in Scotland. However, his family in Farnham asked for his remains to be brought home. In 1943, he was reburied here in Green Lane Cemetery.

Home Guard Hero

Lieutenant Ernest Lyford is also buried nearby. He was 55 years old and part of the Home Guard. This group helped protect Britain during the war. Lieutenant Lyford sadly died by accident in 1943 while training with bombs.
