The Green Party (also known as MDG) is a political party in Norway. It focuses on green politics, which means protecting the environment. The party is considered a centre-left party. This means it supports ideas that are usually seen as progressive and focused on social fairness.
The Green Party has three seats in the Norwegian Parliament. This is Norway's main law-making body. They also have members in local councils across Norway. These include municipal (city/town) councils and county councils.
The party is part of a bigger movement. It is a member of the European Green Party and the Global Greens. These are groups of green parties from different countries. The Norwegian Green Party was inspired by the German Green Party when it was founded. Today, Arild Hermstad is the leader of the party.

History of the Green Party
The idea for a national green party in Norway started in 1984. The party officially began in 1988. Important thinkers like Arne Næss and Johan Galtung helped to start it.
For many years, the Green Party had only a few elected members in local elections. In national elections, they did not get much support.
After 2005, more and more people joined the Green Party. In 2011, they had a big success in local elections. They got almost 22,000 votes across Norway.
In the 2013 national election, the party gained a lot of support. They received over 79,000 votes. This was 2.8 percent of all votes. Rasmus Hansson became the first Green Party member elected to the Norwegian Parliament.
In 2015, the Green Party got more than 4% of the votes nationally in local elections. They even came in third place in Oslo. The party has said it will not join a government that plans to keep drilling for oil in the North Sea.
What the Green Party Believes In
The Green Party is part of a worldwide movement for the environment. Their main goal is to protect nature and make sure we use resources in a way that can last. This is called ecological sustainability.
Here are some of their key ideas:
- They want to introduce a tax on things that are wasteful.
- They aim to change the food industry. They want to increase the production of organic crops. These are grown without harmful chemicals. They also want to support eco-friendly farming.
- The party wants Norway to reduce how much petroleum (oil and gas) it takes from the ground. They suggest stopping this by 2035. This is to help fight climate change.
- The Green Party also supports social progressivism and social justice. This means they want society to be fair for everyone.
