What is a Party Leader?
Every political party has a leader. This person is usually the most powerful official within that party. They are in charge of how the party talks to the public. Think of them as the party's main spokesperson. They work hard to make sure people understand what the party stands for and why they should support it.
Leading the Way to Office
In many countries where people vote for their leaders (called representative democracies), party leaders often try to become the top leader of the whole country. They compete directly for important political jobs.
Party Leaders and Presidents
In some countries, like the United States, the top leader is called a President. These are known as presidential republics. Here, the leader of a political party might run to become President. If they win, they become the country's leader, and they are also seen as the leader of their party.
Party Leaders and Prime Ministers
Other countries, like the United Kingdom or Canada, have a system called a parliamentary system. In these places, the top leader is usually called a Prime Minister. A party leader in a parliamentary system will try to get elected to the country's law-making body, called the legislature. If their party wins the most seats in the legislature, their party leader usually becomes the Prime Minister. They then lead both their party and the government.
