The Green Emperor (scientific name: Anax gibbosulus) is a really big dragonfly that belongs to the Aeshnidae family. Dragonflies are amazing insects known for their bright colors and incredible flying skills!

Meet the Green Emperor Dragonfly

The Green Emperor is one of the largest dragonflies you might ever see. It was first described by a scientist named Jules Pierre Rambur in 1842. These fascinating creatures are often called "emperors" because of their impressive size and powerful flight.

What Does It Look Like?

This dragonfly truly lives up to its name! The Green Emperor has a mostly green body, which helps it blend in with the plants around its watery home. Its tail, also called an abdomen, is dark brown with some lighter markings. Imagine a large insect with a bright green body and a long, dark tail – that's the Green Emperor! Like all dragonflies, it has two pairs of strong, clear wings that allow it to fly very fast and even hover in the air.

Where Does It Live?

The Green Emperor dragonfly loves to live near water. You can find it in places like swamps and areas with brackish water. Brackish water is a mix of fresh water and salty ocean water, often found in estuaries or coastal marshes.

These dragonflies live across a wide area, from India all the way through northern Australia and out into the Pacific Ocean. This means they can be found in many different countries and islands, always close to the water they need to survive.
