Greenhills Adventure Park was a fun theme park located near Victor Harbor in South Australia. It first opened its doors in 1982 and was officially launched in March 1983. A government official, Gavin Keneally, who was the Minister for Tourism for South Australia at the time, helped open it. The park brought joy to many visitors for years before it closed on May 1, 2016.

Park History

How Greenhills Adventure Park Started

Greenhills Adventure Park was created by two families, Margaret and Bill McKenzie, along with Rosemary and Tom Builder. They started the park in 1982, and it officially opened in 1983. The park was quite large, covering about 10 hectares (which is around 25 acres) of land. It offered more than 20 different attractions for people to enjoy. To help run the park, especially during busy times, Meg Whibley was hired as the Managing Director. The park also had three full-time staff members and about 30 seasonal workers.

Why Greenhills Adventure Park Closed

In 2009, the McKenzie family sold the land where the park was located. It was bought by land developers Daniel McOmish and Dean Kyros. They planned to build 66 new properties on the land in different stages. Even though the land was sold, the park stayed open for several more years.

However, in mid-2015, it was announced that Greenhills Adventure Park would close its gates for good on May 1, 2016. This decision was made because the developers wanted to start building the new properties. Also, the park's electricity and water bills had become much more expensive. To celebrate its final season, the park sold tickets at a lower price. After the park closed, on June 25, 2016, many of its rides and equipment were sold off at an auction.

Fun Attractions at the Park

Greenhills Adventure Park had many exciting activities for visitors. Here are some of the popular ones:

  • Tractor-drawn train: Visitors could ride a train pulled by a tractor. This ride took guests all around the park and lasted about 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Dry slide: The park featured a huge 50-meter dry slide. It was the biggest dry slide in the entire Fleurieu Peninsula area.
  • Half court tennis: If you liked sports, you could play tennis on a half-sized court. The park provided all the rackets and balls you needed from their kiosk.
  • Mazes: There was a fun wooden maze to explore. Guests could try to find their way through its twists and turns.
  • Archery: The park had an archery range where you could practice shooting a bow and arrow. All the equipment was supplied.
  • Canoes: Adventurous visitors could take canoes out on the Hindmarsh River. You could even paddle all the way to the ocean, which was a journey of about three hours.
  • Par 3 golf: For golf lovers, there was a nine-hole golf course. The holes were shorter, ranging from 60 to 90 meters long, making it a "par 3" course. Golf balls and clubs were available for use.
  • Aqua bikes: You could ride special aqua bikes on a lake within the park. While riding, you could enjoy views of the beautiful River Red Gums growing nearby.
