Greenwood is a small place in South Dakota, a state in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and buildings that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's part of a larger area called Charles Mix County.
History of Greenwood
Greenwood has a long history. A post office was first opened there in 1859. This was an important place for people to send and receive letters and packages. The post office stayed open for many years, finally closing in 1965.
The community got its name because of a special feature nearby: a grove of trees. A "grove" is a small group of trees, and this one was close to where the community first started.
