Greenwood Park was a very special place in Nashville, Tennessee. It was the first park and recreation area created just for the African American community in the city. This park opened in 1905. It was a big space, about 40 acres, which is like 30 football fields!

The park was founded by Preston Taylor, a wealthy minister and a former slave. It was located a few miles east of downtown Nashville. Greenwood Park was a popular spot for fun and relaxation until it closed in 1949.

Every year, Greenwood Park hosted a large fair. This fair was organized by the Tennessee Colored Fair Association. It was a huge event for the community. People came from all over to enjoy the fair.

In 1909, the fair was extra special. Famous speaker Booker T. Washington gave a speech there. The amazing Fisk Jubilee Singers also performed. It was a time for celebration and learning.

Getting There

It was easy to get to Greenwood Park. Electric streetcars served the park. It was located at the end of the Fairfield Street trolley line. This made it simple for many people to visit and enjoy all the park had to offer.
