Greg Osby (born August 3, 1960) is an American musician. He is famous for playing the saxophone and composing jazz music.
About Greg Osby
Greg Osby was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He studied music at Howard University and the Berklee College of Music. In 1982, he moved to New York City. There, he played with many well-known jazz artists. Some of these included Dizzy Gillespie and Herbie Hancock.
In 1985, Greg joined a group called Special Edition. He also helped start a group called the M-Base Collective. This group included other talented musicians like Geri Allen and Steve Coleman. The M-Base Collective explored new ways to create jazz music.
Greg Osby started making his own albums in the mid-1980s. He first recorded with JMT Records. Later, in 1989, he signed with Blue Note Records. This is a very famous jazz record label.
In 2007, Greg started his own record company called Inner Circle Music. He helped young musicians, like pianist Jason Moran, get started. Jason Moran played on many of Greg's albums in the 1990s. These albums included Further Ado and Banned in New York.
Greg has also played with other bands. He toured with Phil Lesh and Friends. He also performed with the Dead, which was a new version of the famous band Grateful Dead.
A writer from The New York Times, Nate Chinen, described Greg Osby as a "mentor and a pacesetter." He said Greg helps connect different generations of jazz musicians. He also mentioned Greg's clear saxophone sound and quick, fluttering playing style.
