Greg Osby (born August 3, 1960) is a famous American saxophonist and music composer. He is known for his unique style and for helping to create a new type of jazz music.

A Musician's Journey

Greg Osby was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He loved music from a young age. To follow his passion, he studied music at Howard University and later at the famous Berklee College of Music.

In 1982, Osby moved to New York City, the heart of the jazz world. There, he got the chance to play with some of the greatest jazz legends. These included Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, and Jack DeJohnette. Playing with these masters helped him grow as a musician.

The M-Base Movement

In the 1980s, Osby joined a group of creative musicians. This group included artists like Steve Coleman and Cassandra Wilson. Together, they started a new music movement called the M-Base Collective.

M-Base was all about finding new ways to express ideas through jazz. The music often had complex rhythms and fresh, surprising melodies. Osby became a key figure in this exciting new style of music.

A Leader and a Mentor

In the mid-1980s, Greg Osby started recording his own albums. He signed with the famous Blue Note label in 1989. He created many popular albums, including Further Ado and Banned in New York.

Osby is also known for helping younger musicians. He gave pianist Jason Moran his first big break. Moran played on many of Osby's albums in the 1990s. In 2007, Osby started his own record label, Inner Circle Music, to help other talented artists get noticed.

A writer for The New York Times called Osby "a mentor and a pacesetter." This means he is a leader who guides other musicians and sets new trends in jazz.
