Terri Lyne Carrington (born August 4, 1965) is an American jazz drummer, composer, and teacher. She has played with many famous musicians. These include Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Herbie Hancock, and Wayne Shorter. She also toured with Herbie Hancock for ten years.
In 2007, she became a professor at Berklee College of Music. This is the same school she attended. She received an honorary doctorate from Berklee in 2003. Terri Lyne Carrington has won three Grammy Awards. In 2013, she won for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. This made her the first female musician to win in this category.
Carrington is the founder of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice. She also leads The Carr Center in Detroit, Michigan. She helps guide many music organizations. She also hosts a weekly radio show called Future Flavors with Terri Lyne Carrington. You can hear it on SiriusXM's Real Jazz.

Terri Lyne Carrington's Early Life
Terri Lyne Carrington was born on August 4, 1965. She grew up in Medford, Massachusetts, in a musical family. Her mother played piano for fun. Her father was a saxophonist and led the Boston Jazz Society.
When she was seven, Terri received a drum set. It had belonged to her grandfather, Matt Carrington. He played with famous musicians like Fats Waller. After three years of lessons, she performed at the Wichita Jazz Festival. She played with Clark Terry. At age 11, she received a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music.
At Berklee, she played with talented musicians. These included Kevin Eubanks and Donald Harrison. She also studied with drum teacher Alan Dawson. She made a private recording called TLC and Friends.
Her Amazing Music Career

In 1983, Terri Lyne Carrington moved to New York. Her mentor, Jack DeJohnette, encouraged her. There, she worked with many jazz greats. These included Stan Getz and David Sanborn. In the late 1980s, she moved to Los Angeles. She became the house drummer for The Arsenio Hall Show. Later, she played drums on Quincy Jones' TV show VIBE.
Leading Her Own Bands
As a bandleader, she has worked with many artists. Some of them are Geri Allen, Esperanza Spalding, and Patrice Rushen. In 2011, she toured South America. She played with Wayne Shorter and John Patitucci. She also directed the Sing the Truth Tour. This tour featured Dianne Reeves and Angelique Kidjo.
Her Recorded Music
In 1988, Carrington started creating her own music. Her first album, Real Life Story, came out in 1989. It was nominated for a Grammy. Many famous musicians played on it. These included Carlos Santana and Wayne Shorter. In 2002, she released Jazz Is a Spirit. Herbie Hancock was one of the musicians on this album.
In 2009, she released More to Say ... Real Life Story: NextGen. This album was a follow-up to her first. It featured artists like George Duke and Nancy Wilson.
Her 2011 album, The Mosaic Project, won a Grammy. It was named Best Jazz Vocal Album. In 2013, she released Money Jungle: Provocative in Blue. This album won the Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. She was the first woman to win this award.
Carrington also works with visual artists. She has collaborated with Mickalene Thomas. In 2020, she received the NEA Jazz Masters Fellowships. This award honors musicians who have greatly contributed to jazz.
In 2022, she released her book New Standards: 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers. She also released an album called New Standards Vol. 1. This project highlights music by women composers. She also wrote a children's book. It is called Three of a Kind - The Allen Carrington Spalding Trio. It's about three women who became friends through jazz.
