Growing Up and Learning

Dianne Reeves was born in Detroit, Michigan. She came from a very musical family. Her father sang, and her mother played the trumpet. Her uncle, Charles Burrell, was a bassist, and her cousin was the famous musician George Duke.

Dianne's father passed away when she was only two years old. She was then raised in Denver, Colorado, by her mother, Vada Swanson, and other family members. She went to Cure D'Ars Catholic School for most of her early education in Denver.

Her Music Career

Starting Her Musical Journey

In 1971, Dianne started singing and playing the piano. She was part of her high school band. While performing at a music event in Chicago, a famous trumpeter named Clark Terry noticed her. He invited her to sing with him. Dianne said she loved how the musicians worked together. It was a great learning experience for a young singer. She later studied classical singing at the University of Colorado.

Moving to Los Angeles and New York

Dianne moved to Los Angeles to continue her music career. There, she sang and recorded with well-known musicians like Stanley Turrentine and Lenny White. She also recorded with a band called Caldera. Later, she started her own band called Night Flight with Billy Childs. She worked with Billy Childs again in the 1990s.

After some time, Dianne moved to New York City. From 1983 to 1986, she toured with the legendary singer Harry Belafonte.

Signing with Blue Note and Grammy Wins

In 1987, Dianne signed with Blue Note, a famous jazz record label. That same year, her first album, Dianne Reeves, was nominated for a Grammy Award. This album featured other jazz greats like Herbie Hancock and Freddie Hubbard. She went on to win five Grammy Awards for her incredible jazz vocal albums.

Music experts have praised Dianne's singing. They say she is excellent at telling stories through her songs. She is also a skilled scat singer, which means she can improvise melodies using sounds instead of words.
