Greggton was a community in Gregg County, Texas. It was not officially a city or town. It started as a small stop for trains. Over time, it grew much bigger, especially because of oil. Eventually, it became part of a larger city nearby.

How Greggton Started

Greggton began in 1873. Its first name was "Willow Springs." It was a stop along the Texas and Pacific Railway line. This railway helped people and goods travel across the state.

In 1926, a major road called U.S. Highway 80 was created. This highway passed right through Greggton. It became the main street of the community.

Growing Big with Oil

The community of Greggton grew a lot in the early 1930s. This was because of the East Texas Oil Boom. Many people moved to the area to work in the oil fields.

In November 1932, Greggton got its own post office. Around this time, the name changed from Willow Springs to "Greggton."

The population of Greggton quickly increased. In 1920, only 180 people lived there. By 1936, the population had jumped to 1,500 people. There were also 125 businesses in the community. By 1949, Greggton had 2,350 residents.

In the 1950s, Greggton even had its own movie theater. It was called "The Ritz."

Becoming Part of Longview

Greggton did not stay an independent community forever. In December 1959, it became part of Longview. This process is called annexation. It means a smaller area joins a larger city.

On May 31, 1960, Greggton's postal services also moved to Longview. Today, the area that was once Greggton is served by the Pine Tree Independent School District. This school district is part of Longview.
