Gregory Deyermenjian, born in 1949 in Boston, is an American explorer and a psychologist. A psychologist is someone who studies how people think and feel. Gregory Deyermenjian is famous for his exciting expeditions to Peru, where he searches for ancient Inca ruins and a legendary lost city called Paititi.

He is also a long-time member of The Explorers Club, a special group for adventurers and scientists who explore the world.

Exploring Ancient Peru

Gregory Deyermenjian began his adventures in Peru in 1981. He visited the old ruins of Vilcabamba la Vieja. After that, he became very interested in the areas northeast and north of Cusco, Peru.

Since the mid-1980s, he has led many trips into the wild parts of Peru. His main goal has been to find Paititi. This is a legendary lost city that is part of the history and stories of the western Amazon jungle. Many people believe Paititi was a secret city of the Inca Empire.

Key Discoveries and Expeditions

Deyermenjian has made many important discoveries during his explorations. Here are some of his notable achievements:

  • Mameria (1984, 1985, 1986, 1989): He explored and recorded many ancient Inca ruins in this area.
  • Apu Catinti (1986): He was the first person to climb this important peak.
  • Toporake (1989): He found and documented Inca "barracks," which were like old army camps.
  • Road of Stone (1993): He traveled along an ancient Inca "Road of Stone" past the Toporake Plateau.
  • Callanga (1994): He discovered and studied Inca and even older ruins in this region.
  • Llactapata (1995): He found and was the first to climb an Inca complex at the base of Callanga's peak, "Llactapata."
  • Pyramids of Paratoari (1996): He was the first to visit and truly understand the nature of the "Pyramids of Paratoari" in Manú Province. These are natural formations, not man-made pyramids.
  • Pantiacolla Plateau (1999): He led a team from Brazil, Italy, and North America. They followed the Inca "Road of Stone" onto the Pantiacolla Plateau. They discovered "Lago de Ángel" (Angel's Lake) and its Inca platforms north of the Yavero River.
  • Río Choritiari (2000): He fully investigated claims that Paititi could be found along the Río Choritiari.

Finding More Inca Ruins

In June 2004, Gregory Deyermenjian continued his "Quest for Paititi." He worked with his long-time expedition partner, Paulino Mamani. They were also joined by Goyo Toledo, who had been a partner in the 1980s.

This team discovered several important Inca ruins. These ruins were found along branches of the Inca Road of Stone. They were located at a peak known as Último Punto, in the northern part of the Pantiacolla region of Peru. These discoveries help us learn more about the ancient Inca civilization.

In the Media

Gregory Deyermenjian's adventures have even been featured on television! He appeared in a 2015 episode of the show Expedition Unknown. The episode was titled "City of Gold," and it explored the mysteries of lost cities.
