Beowulf - mearc stapa
Beowulf's author often uses substitute phrases for Grendel's name like this one, the mearc stapa ("mark-stepper"), an inhabitant of the borderland.

Grendel is a scary monster from an old English story called Beowulf. This story is an epic poem, which is a long poem that tells about a hero's adventures. Beowulf was written a very long time ago, between the years 700 and 1000 AD.

In the poem, Grendel is one of the main bad guys, also known as an antagonist. He is a creature that brings fear and destruction. People in the story are terrified of Grendel. Only the brave hero Beowulf dares to face him.

Who is Grendel?

Grendel is often described as a monster. However, some experts discuss if he is truly a monster or something else. The poem describes him as a huge, powerful creature. He is also very evil and enjoys causing harm.

The story says that Grendel is a descendant of Cain. Cain is a famous figure from the Bible who committed the first murder. This connection makes Grendel even more evil and cursed. It explains why he hates people and lives in darkness.

Grendel's Story in Beowulf

Grendel lives in the dark, swampy lands outside a great hall called Heorot. This hall belongs to King Hrothgar. The king and his people often gather there to celebrate and tell stories. Grendel hates the sound of their joy and music.

One night, Grendel attacks Heorot. He kills many of King Hrothgar's warriors. For 12 long years, Grendel keeps attacking the hall. He makes it impossible for anyone to stay there safely. The people are filled with fear and despair.

Beowulf's Fight with Grendel

News of Grendel's attacks reaches a faraway land. A brave hero named Beowulf hears about the monster. Beowulf decides to sail to King Hrothgar's kingdom to help. He wants to defeat Grendel and bring peace back to Heorot.

When Beowulf arrives, he waits for Grendel to attack. Grendel comes to the hall one night, ready to kill more warriors. But this time, Beowulf is waiting for him. Beowulf fights Grendel without any weapons. He uses only his incredible strength.

During their fierce battle, Beowulf tears off Grendel's arm. Grendel is badly hurt and runs away to his home in the swamps. He dies there from his terrible wound. Beowulf hangs Grendel's arm in Heorot as a sign of his victory.

Grendel's Mother

After Grendel's death, his mother appears. She is even more terrifying than Grendel. She comes to Heorot to get revenge for her son's death. She kills one of King Hrothgar's closest friends.

Beowulf then has to go to Grendel's mother's lair. This is a dark, underwater cave. Beowulf dives into the lake and fights Grendel's mother in her own home. It is a very difficult fight. Beowulf eventually defeats her with a special sword. He also finds Grendel's dead body there and cuts off his head.

Beowulf returns to Heorot as a true hero. He brings Grendel's head and the hilt of the magic sword. His actions free King Hrothgar's people from the terror of Grendel and his mother.
