Veronica polita, also known as the grey field-speedwell, is a small, pretty flowering plant. It belongs to the plantain family, called Plantaginaceae. You can find it growing in many places around the world, often in gardens or fields.

About the Grey Field-Speedwell

What it Looks Like

The grey field-speedwell has stems that can be hairy. They either spread flat on the ground or grow upwards a bit. Its leaves are a dull green color. They are usually wider than they are long and have rounded shapes. The edges of the leaves are often toothed, like a saw. Each leaf has a small stem connecting it to the main plant.

The flowers of the grey field-speedwell are small and a bright blue color. They grow on short stalks that come out from where the leaves meet the stem. These stalks are usually about the same length as the leaves, or sometimes a little longer.

Where it Grows

This plant originally comes from a large area called Eurasia. This includes parts of Europe, Asia, and possibly the British Isles. It also grows naturally in western Asia and northern Africa. Over time, it has spread to many other parts of the world. It often grows in places where people farm, like fields and gardens. Because of this, it is sometimes seen as a common weed.

Plant Problems

The grey field-speedwell can get a plant sickness called downy mildew. This disease is caused by a tiny organism named Peronospora agrestis. This organism is not a fungus, but a type of water mold. It can make the plant look unhealthy.
