The Story of Grippo's
How It All Began
In 1919, a man named Angelo Grippo started his business. He began by making rolled sugar cones. These are the crispy cones you put ice cream in!
A few years later, in 1923, Angelo added traditional hand-twisted pretzels. These pretzels were very popular. They sold for just one cent in stores around Greater Cincinnati.
Inventing the Loop Pretzel
In 1930, Angelo Grippo invented something new: the "loop pretzel." This pretzel looks like a teardrop. He wanted to make a pretzel that was stronger and wouldn't break as easily. Angelo even built the machines to make these special loop pretzels!
Besides the loop pretzel, Grippo's also makes other kinds. You can find rod pretzels, braided pretzels, and twist pretzels.
Adding Potato Chips
By 1959, Grippo's added potato chips to their snack lineup. Today, they make many tasty chip flavors. Some popular ones include Bar-B-Q Potato Chips and Salt and Vinegar Chips.
Other flavors are Cheddar Cheese and Jalapeno Chips and Hot Dill Pickle Chips. They also have Smokin' Hot Kettle Chips and Sweet Bermuda Onion Chips.
Famous Bar-B-Q Chips
Grippo's Bar-B-Q chips are very well known. They often have a lot of powdery, spicy barbecue seasoning. People love this flavor so much that Grippo's made more products.
They offer X Hot BBQ Chips and XX Hot BBQ Chips for those who like extra spice. You can even buy Grippo's BBQ seasoning by itself! They also make Grippo's Original BBQ Sauce.
Popularity and Reach
Grippo's Bar-B-Q Potato Chips are super popular in Evansville, Indiana. They have become a big part of the local culture there. Grippo's snacks are also loved in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. Many people feel a sense of nostalgia for them. This has created a "cult-like following" for the brand.
A Small Recall
In March 2013, Grippo's had a small issue. They had to recall some potato chips. This happened because of a minor problem with their equipment.
