Exploring Grise Fiord

Where is Grise Fiord?

Grise Fiord is located on the southern coast of Ellesmere Island, which is part of the Qikiqtaaluk Region in Nunavut, Canada. This area is very far north, making it a place with unique landscapes and wildlife.

How Grise Fiord Got Its Name

The name "Grise Fiord" means "pig inlet" in Norwegian. It was given this name by a Norwegian explorer named Otto Sverdrup. Around the year 1900, during one of his expeditions, he heard walrus in the area. He thought the sounds they made were a lot like pigs! That's how this special place got its unusual name.

The Community of Grise Fiord

At the southern end of Grise Fiord, you'll find a small Inuit community also called Grise Fiord. This settlement is very important because it is the northernmost civilian community in all of Canada. People who live here experience life in the Arctic, with long winters and unique challenges and beauties.
