Gruffydd ap Rhydderch (died 1055 AD) was a powerful king in Wales. He ruled over parts of south Wales, including the kingdoms of Gwent and Morgannwg. Later, he also became king of Deheubarth, another important Welsh kingdom.
Gruffydd was the son of Rhydderch ab Iestyn. His father had ruled Deheubarth from 1023 to 1033. This background helped Gruffydd become a strong leader.

Early Life and Power
Gruffydd received control of Caerleon in 1031. He made its defenses stronger, which was important for protecting his lands. He was already a king in part of Morgannwg.
Becoming King of Deheubarth
Gruffydd ap Rhydderch became involved in the politics of Deheubarth. In 1044, Gruffydd ap Llywelyn, who was already king of Gwynedd, took over Deheubarth from Hywel ab Edwin.
However, Gruffydd ap Rhydderch fought back. In 1045, he successfully drove Gruffydd ap Llywelyn out of Deheubarth. After this victory, Gruffydd ap Rhydderch became the new king of Deheubarth himself.

Fighting Invaders
He often fought against raids by the Danes (Vikings). These invaders tried to attack Welsh lands, but Gruffydd stood firm. He also faced repeated attacks from his rival, Gruffydd ap Llywelyn.
In 1049, Gruffydd ap Rhydderch even joined forces with an Irish Viking fleet. Together, they sailed up the River Severn, showing his power and reach.
End of His Reign
Gruffydd ap Rhydderch's reign ended in 1055. He was killed in battle by Gruffydd ap Llywelyn. After this, Gruffydd ap Llywelyn took control of Deheubarth once more.
His Son's Efforts
Gruffydd ap Rhydderch's son was Caradog ap Gruffydd. Caradog received Caerleon in 1057. He tried to follow in his father's footsteps and gain control of Deheubarth. However, Caradog was also killed in battle at the Battle of Mynydd Carn.
