Hywel ab Edwin facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hywel ap Edwin (died 1044) was a king who ruled Deheubarth, a kingdom in south Wales. He was king from 1033 to 1043.

Hywel was the son of Edwin ap Einion. He was also the great-grandson of a famous Welsh king named Hywel Dda.

Becoming King

In 1033, the previous king, Rhydderch ap Iestyn, died. Rhydderch had taken the throne from the rightful rulers. After his death, Hywel became king of Deheubarth. He shared the kingdom with his brother, Maredudd.

Their rule was not easy. In 1034, Rhydderch's sons fought Hywel and Maredudd in a battle at Irathwy. The old records do not say who won this fight. But it seems Hywel and Maredudd won because they stayed in power.

Challenges to His Rule

In 1035, Hywel's brother Maredudd died. Hywel then became the only king of Deheubarth. He faced many challenges during his time as king.

One big problem was attacks from Viking raiders. These groups often sailed to Wales to steal goods. Another challenge came from Gruffydd ap Llywelyn. Gruffydd was a powerful leader who had already taken control of Gwynedd, a kingdom in North Wales.

Losing and Fighting for His Kingdom

In 1042, Hywel won a battle against a group of Viking raiders near Carmarthen. This was an important victory for him.

However, in 1042 or 1043, Gruffydd ap Llywelyn drove Hywel out of his kingdom. Gruffydd took over Deheubarth. He also took control of something very important to Hywel.

In 1044, Hywel returned to Wales. He brought help from a fleet of ships from Ireland. He wanted to win back his kingdom. But Gruffydd defeated them in a battle near the mouth of the River Towy. Hywel was killed in this battle.

After Hywel

Hywel's nephew, Maredudd ab Owain ab Edwin, became king later. This happened after Gruffydd died in 1063.
