Guajara (legendary Guanche woman) facts for kids
Guajara or Guaxara is the name of a woman from an old story about the Guanches, who were the native people of the Canary Islands. She is a character in a long poem called Antigüedades de las Islas Afortunadas by Antonio de Viana, which tells about the Spanish conquest of Tenerife.
Guajara's Story
Guajara is a close friend of Tinguaro, who is the brother of a powerful leader named Mencey Bencomo. She is also friends with Dácil. In the story, Mencey Bencomo acts unfairly towards Guajara.
A Difficult Choice
Another leader, Mencey Beneharo, makes a promise to Tinguaro. If Tinguaro wins a battle against the Spanish, he will be allowed to marry Beneharo's daughter, Guacimara, and become the next leader. Guajara feels very sad and upset about Tinguaro's interest in Guacimara.
Guajara's Sad End
To try and stop the marriage, Guajara talks to Ruymán, who is Tinguaro's nephew and also cares for Guacimara. However, the marriage still happens. Guajara is so heartbroken by these events that she tragically dies by falling from a high place.
