Guajara (legendary Guanche woman) facts for kids
Guajara or Guaxara was a woman from the ancient Guanches people of the Canary Islands. She is a character in an old epic poem called Antigüedades de las Islas Afortunadas by Antonio de Viana. This poem tells the story of the Spanish conquest of Tenerife.
Guajara's Story
In the poem, Guajara is the partner of Tinguaro. Tinguaro was the brother of Bencomo, a powerful king (called a Mencey) of Tenerife. Guajara was also a friend of Dácil, another important character. The poem describes how Mencey Bencomo betrayed Guajara.
Later in the story, another Mencey named Beneharo made a promise to Tinguaro. Beneharo said Tinguaro could marry his daughter, Guacimara, and become the next king if he won a battle against the Spanish invaders. Guajara became very jealous because Tinguaro was interested in Guacimara. To stop the marriage, Guajara secretly influenced Ruymán. Ruymán was Tinguaro's nephew and was also in love with Guacimara.
According to a historian named Juan Bethencourt Alfonso, Guajara and Tinguaro had five children together.
