Myrciaria guaquiea, often called guaquica or ibá-cuíca (these are its common names in Portuguese), is a special plant. It belongs to the Myrtaceae family, which also includes plants like eucalyptus and guava.
This plant is an evergreen shrub or a small tree. "Evergreen" means it keeps its leaves all year long, staying green even in winter.
Where Does Guaquica Grow?
The guaquica plant is found only in a specific part of the world. It is endemic to the eastern areas of Brazil, a large country in South America. This means it grows naturally nowhere else!
What Does Guaquica Look Like?
Guaquica plants can grow to be between 4 and 7 metres (about 13 to 23 feet) tall. That's about as tall as a small house!
Its Delicious Fruit
One of the most interesting things about the guaquica is its fruit. It produces small, yellow fruits that are about 20 to 25 millimetres (less than an inch) across. These fruits are edible, meaning you can eat them!
People often enjoy the guaquica fruit raw. It is said to have a taste similar to another fruit called jaboticaba.
