Guaraná (soft drink) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Guaraná is a popular fizzy drink, also known as a soft drink or soda. It gets its name and special flavor from the guarana plant, which grows in the Amazon rainforest. This unique drink is especially famous in Brazil, where it first started.

The Story of Guaraná Soda

The idea for guaraná soda began in Brazil. In 1905, a doctor named Fara from Resende started making syrup from the guarana fruit. A year later, in 1906, a soft drink factory called Guaraná Cyrilla opened in Santa Maria.

At first, the drink was a bit bitter and not very popular. But then, Pedro Baptista de Andrade created a new recipe. He sold his secret formula to a company called Antarctica. In 1921, Antarctica found a way to remove the bitter taste. They made the drink taste much better, highlighting the fruit's natural flavor. This is when Guaraná Champagne Antarctica was launched, and it became a big hit! Today, you can find many different brands of guaraná soda all over Brazil.

Another Sweet Discovery

Another type of guaraná drink was made by accident in 1920. This happened in the state of Maranhão, thanks to a pharmacist named Jesus Norberto Gomes. He wanted to make a medicine, but his business didn't work out.

So, he decided to make a drink for his grandchildren. He mixed extracts from 17 ingredients from the Amazon rainforest, including guarana and cinnamon. Everyone loved the pink drink he made! Over time, the taste of this pink drink, now known as Guaraná Jesus, became less popular in some places. However, it is still very popular in Maranhão, keeping its original recipe. In 2001, Coca-Cola bought this famous brand.
