The Guardian Bank Building is a tall building in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. It is located on Euclid Avenue, a well-known street in the city. This building has had a few different names over the years. It was first called the New England Building. Later, it was known as the National City Bank Building.
History of the Guardian Building
This important building was completed in 1896. It stands right next to the National City Center. The Guardian Bank Building is 221 feet (67 m) tall. When it was built, it was one of the tallest buildings in America. It was also the tallest building in Cleveland for many years. In 1922, the Keith Building became taller than it.
Who Designed the Building?
The original design for the building came from a famous architecture firm. This firm was called Shepley, Rutan, and Coolidge. Later, in 1915, another firm updated the building. This second firm was Walker and Weeks.
Modern Changes and Uses
In 1999, the building was changed into a Holiday Inn Express hotel. Because of its history and design, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 8, 2000. This list helps protect important places.
In 2010, a large company called Rosetta decided to move into the building. They planned to rent the top five floors. They also wanted to build a new space on the roof. They even thought about changing the building's name again.
Later, in March 2012, new plans were announced. Developers decided to turn five of the building's stories into apartments. They planned to create 85 new apartments for people to live in.
