History of Guayabal de Síquima

Guayabal de Síquima was officially started in 1721. This happened when Father Luis Calvo Vasallo became the parish priest for the area. He led the effort to build the first homes.

Early Settlements and Construction

Father Luis Calvo Vasallo helped build 22 houses made of bareque. These were traditional homes built with a mix of mud and straw. He also helped build 5 houses with mud walls. These homes were placed around what is now the main park of the town.

How the Town Was Organized

In 1739, the area of Guayabal de Síquima was divided into four main parts. Each part had a special name with a meaning.

  • Chiniata: This zone was named to honor an old indigenous leader or Cacique.
  • El Trigo: This name means "the wheat." It was given because this area was where wheat was first grown in the region.
  • Resguardo: This name means "refuge" or "defense." It was named after what the native people called Muizane.
  • Manoa: This zone was named in memory of another ancient Cacique from the region.
